also

I saw Dr. Dog last night - they were pretty good. Not amazing though, to be honest. But that's probably because they played only songs off their new album, so I didn't know any of them. But then they played a six song encore of all my favorites, which was overwhelmingly great. So...mixed feelings about that concert. Their best performance was for "Heart it Races" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QvJ3dXqmvw) which isn't even their song...but oh well.

AAAALLLLSO I haven't been on this blog in eons, so I'll mention that last semester I went to these concerts:
- Das Racist - I think they were bad. All I remember is a powerpoint of neon green cats...it was at Reed, and I was incapacitated. It was very fun though, and at one point more people were dancing onstage with Das Racist than were in the audience...
- Toro y Moi - I didn't really know more than a song or two by them, but they were fun. They were super chill; I'd have liked to see a little more bopping.
- YACHT - sooooo good. Soooo good. Suuuuch good performers. Excellent crowd, good company. YACHT killed it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVjLrzCegtM was stuck in my head for three months after.
- Typhoon - lurked outside and caught a good chunk of their MFNW performance in Pioneer Square, and after five seconds I had goosebumps and was shivering at how good it was. I would really, really, really like to see them.
WHERE IS THE MODEST MOUSE/OUTKAST COLLABORATIVE ALBUM?!

I can't wait.

ps. hello again world.

Last Friday there was supposed to be a Surfer Blood concert on campus, but the organizers of the event didn't clear it with the admin. So, seeing as word had gotten out to the community and a bunch of randos had started calling the school, the school obviously felt uncomfortable with the event seeing as no security measures had been set in place. So the concert was ostensibly cancelled...but actually just moved off campus. It was held in a bike shop - all the bikes pushed aside to make room. I think 3 (maybe 4) bands played before SB, and they were all actually really good. There were only like maaaybe 75 people there, which was sweet. There wasn't a stage so I could only see the band when they were crowd-surfing, which was fine.

Surfer Blood was AMAZING. AMAZING. I stood near the back away from the mosh pit with some friends and we just like bopped and absorbed the sound. They sounded better live than recorded, in my opinion. I get a super strong Vampire Weekend vibe from them a lot of the time, but it was waayy less pronounced live. They had a whole different edge that was extremely appealing.

If you're not familiar with them, here's my three fav songs. "Take it Easy" was the best song of the concert, I thought, because the lead singer was crowd-surfing, singing, and playing guitar all at the same time. It was ridiculous. Awesome.

"oh my god" - kaiser chiefs

excellently catchy. nice eyeliner dude. this band's a new one to me, though a few songs were oddly familiar (like "ruby").

"people II: the reckoning" - andrew jackson jihad
thanks for the rec, hans. this singer sounds like hutch harris but more consistent. this song is a lovely example of dark feeling light.

"middle distance runner" and "black dirt" - sea wolf
YES PLEASE. that first one especially kills me.

"genius of love" - tom tom club
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIW4skg3Ceo
